aught in the new year

codger

it occurred to me at some point that the greatest thing about the new millennium thing is not flying cars or near immortality or genetically engineered pizza, but is rather something quaint but not kitsch.  i think i was sitting at the dining room table with the late night crowd of the house, some edgeless weekday night, merging late night and early morning with that damned ohian card game, my mind drifting in sleepiness and the automatic rhythm of the game, when i realized that, in the near future, i can turn to some unsuspecting youngster and say "you know, back in aught three, things were different.  yeap, if you wanted pizza, you had to pick up the phone and call for it: none of this instant gratification and laziness you kids these days suffer from."  not that i want to be a grouchy old man anytime soon (though there is some romantic draw there that i do not understand), but i really look forward to referring to the next few years as "aught seven" and "aught two."  for some reason, there is something inherently cool in that for me.  it made more sense late at night, but i bet in the years to come, we’ll all get the faintest tickle of satisfaction from that odd word "aught."
