life in mono
summer begins and i’m off (watch me go!). back from st. louise is listening and to a job as an accountant’s assistant. at work for three days, and coming home tired after typing for 8 hours. not eating. something’s up. to mom’s office for a cbc. it’s inverted. dr. g looks at the smear. calmly tells me i ether have leukemia or mononucleosis. great. to my gp to get mono and strep tests. ignores cbc and slide. says i have strep. twist his arm to get mono test. comes back positive. great. prescription for steroid (prednazone). manic matt for three days: 5 meals daily, talking too quickly and too loudly. still asleep more than awake. 5 days later, missing only 3 work days, back to work, shuffling papers, entering data, packing boxes. tired for months. summer’s grand.
